SCAM — UNPAID FINE OR WARRANT
Missoula Police Reporting Scam!!
Missoula Police non-emergency desk is being inundated with callers complaining that someone from the PD has either been calling them and threatening with arrest due to an unpaid fine or warrant, or, they are being given a number to call that connects them with the Missoula Police Department.
This is a scam. Generally, nobody from the Missoula Police Department is calling and threatening people with arrest or threatening that an officer is on the way to take them into custody if they don’t pay a fine.
Today, the male caller has a foreign accent and claims to be calling from a “treasury office”. Whoever this person is, he is not associated with the Missoula Police Department. The calls seem to come in the mid-afternoon.
Unfortunately in this day and age of technology, electronic information can be obtained by anyone with the knowledge and equipment to do it. Scam attempts are rampant and occurring all over the country. Cyberspace has made this possible, and nearly impossible for civilian law enforcement to track.
If you receive such a call ask critical questions, to attempt to verify what they are telling you. If they claim to be a part of MPD, ask who their supervisor is, and by what authority they are threatening you with arrest. A real police officer or Police Support Specialist should be able to answer these questions quickly, clearly, & easily.
